Biography

Julie King runs the University of Akron’s divorce mediation training and seminar. She is an experienced attorney with 29 years of legal experience, including civil, criminal and dispute resolution. In July 2023, she was appointed as a magistrate with the Summit County Domestic Relations Court. She is responsible for domestic violence hearings, disposition of motions and conducting hearings related to family law matters within the court’s jurisdiction. Previously, she served as assistant director of academic success programs at the School of Law.

Prior to that she served as a magistrate of the Lake County Domestic Relations Court, where she handled pretrial and trial matters in cases of domestic violence, dissolutions, divorce, support and post decree cases. She also served as the court’s mediation director during her tenure there. Earlier, she was an assistant prosecuting attorney and chief of the appellate Division for the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. She has made many presentations to the local bar and higher education regarding family law issues, mediation, and application of growth mindset principles.  Over the course of two decades, she has taught multiple legal subjects to students enrolled in the paralegal program at Lakeland Community College.

She received a Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from the George Washington University. She is admitted to the bar in Ohio and Alabama.
