University of Akron College of Business Prioritizes AI Programming during 2024-25 Academic Year

Akron, OH – The University of Akron College of Business is launching a comprehensive year-long slate of programming focused on the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designed to drive AI literacy, adoption, innovation and ethical governance, the College of Business has invited industry leaders, AI experts and academic researchers to explore AI’s far-reaching implications for businesses, individuals and society at large.

"This programming is integral," said Dr. James Thomson, interim dean of the College of Business. "At the University of Akron College of Business, our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and tools they need to harness the full potential of AI, while ensuring its ethical and responsible use."

The program will feature a variety of events throughout the year, beginning with the seventh annual Business Analytics and Innovation Summit (BAIS). This flagship event will explore how AI and data analytics are driving organizational success. Attendees will engage with subject-matter experts who have successfully integrated AI into their organizations, and will include discussions covering AI literacy, governance and innovative applications. Notable presentations will be given by:

  • Michael De Leon and Brandon Jusek of Eaton, who will showcase how data analytics enhances emergency communications and supports continuous improvement in decision-making.
  • Tim Hoolihan of Centric will explore how advances in AI technology are making it more accessible, while emphasizing the growing need for AI literacy and workforce empowerment.
  • Kevin Mooney and Joseph Dorocak of Cleveland Clinic will discuss the role of robust governance frameworks in the ethical and effective implementation of AI.

The summit’s keynote speaker is Katherine Lowry, chief information officer of BakerHostetler. Lowry will share insights on BakerHostetler’s journey in data governance, highlighting the implementation of Microsoft Copilot and GenAI, the importance of data quality and the firm’s agile transformation. Her presentation will offer practical strategies for overcoming the challenges of AI adoption and future-proofing efforts.

In addition to BAIS, the University of Akron College of Business will host a series of AI-focused events throughout the year:

  • The Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies has started hosting monthly meetups to connect AI researchers, educators, professionals, and University of Akron students. Monthly meetups take place in the College of Business first-floor atrium the first Friday of each month from 10-11 a.m.
  • The Human Resource Leadership Summit, hosted by the Department of Management & HR Advisory Board on Oct. 3, will examine AI’s impact on the HR industry, with presentations from Timothy Dimoff, Amy Richmond and Chaz Billington. Discussions will focus on improved efficiency, data-driven decision making and legal issues surrounding AI adoption.
  • The School of Accountancy will welcome Mark Hoose of NVIDIA on Wednesday, Oct. 3 to discuss AI’s transformative power over the world’s largest industries and its profound impact on society. The special presentation will be held in the Goodyear Corporate Classroom, part of the Anthony J. Alexander Professional Development Center in the College of Business.
  • The NeuroAI Conference, hosted by the Department of Marketing on Oct. 25, will bridge the gap between academic research and the business community. Distinguished academic speakers, including Dr. Joseph Yun, Dr. Patrick van Esch, Kieu Wong and Dr. Jessica Wilson, will explore the latest advancements in machine learning and neuroscience.
  • The Ohio Economic Forum, scheduled for Wednesday, April 23 in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union, will explore AI and the future of work in Ohio, offering a deep dive into the labor market implications of AI in the region.
  • Finally, the Tax & AI Symposium will examine how AI is reshaping tax practices and compliance, offering fresh perspectives on AI’s role in the accounting field.
