Summer 2018 Welcomes New Teachers to the RET Program06/12/2018
The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering’s Akron Global Polymer Academy recently began the 2018 Research Experience for Teachers in Polymer Engineering (RET) program. This program, funded by NSF Award Number EEC-1542358, sponsors ten high school science teachers who will work for eight weeks conducting polymer research in a lab of a CPSPE faculty member. By the end of the program, those teachers will have developed new lesson plans to introduce STEM to their classrooms in innovative ways.
Lesson plans from previous RET programs include “Decomposition of Polymers: Removal of Chewing Gum,” “Drug Delivery with Polymer Based Nanoparticles,” “Wacky Water,” and “Polymer Pie,” among many others. These lesson plans are a perfect example of the way Research Experience for Teachers demonstrates fundamental principles to teachers and provides them with the tools to translate this knowledge to the classroom.
CPSPE welcomes these teachers to UA as we strive to support teachers in their quest to provide new inquiry-based learning opportunities in the classroom. RET is making history by building long-lasting partnerships between the K-12 STEM community, industry, and The University of Akron to improve the overall quality of STEM education in the region.
