Turkish Academy of Sciences Recognizes DPS Alumnus with Prestigious Outstanding Young Scientist Award12/05/2017
A CPSPE alumnus has been awarded with the 2017 Outstanding Young Scientist Award by the Turkish Academy of Sciences. Dr. Bülent Akgün, currently Associate Professor of Chemistry at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, earned his PhD in Polymer Science in 2007 under Dr. Mark Foster. After earning his degree, he spent six years as a postdoctoral researcher and instrument scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Now Akgün, a husband and proud father of two daughters, is being rewarded for all of his hard work.
The Outstanding Young Scientist Awards have been given since 2001 with the aim of promoting outstanding young scientists working in the fields of natural, social and health sciences and engineering; the awards encourage them to carry out their scientific studies in Turkey to support the development of their research groups and recognize quality research projects from Turkey. The award carries with it research support of 20,000 Turkish Lira, the equivalent of a little over five thousand US dollars, each year for three years. This is in addition to a total of 6,000 Turkish Lira, or $1,500, for doctoral students working with the awardee.
Dr. Akgün has been awarded once before by the Science Academy Society in Turkey. Clearly, Akgün is among the best in his field. The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering congratulates him.
