Art Education Fundamentals

The art education program in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art consists of a core curriculum of theory and practice that prepares students to work in a variety of organizational settings, from museums to recreational centers. The B.A. in Art Education plus licensure enables graduates to teach in classrooms from the preschool level through 12th grade.

Students in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art at UA also may earn a Bachelor of Arts in:

  • Art History
  • Studio Art

Students also may pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, which provides comprehensive preparation for professional practice in one of the following areas:

  • Ceramics
  • Graphic Design
  • Jewelry and Metalsmithing
  • Painting and Drawing

Hands-on Experience

The Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, located in Folk Hall, offers 70,000 square feet of learning space — enabling students to explore new areas of creative research and ensuring that their professional skills are cutting edge. Well-equipped studios are devoted to:

  • sculpture

Folk Hall also is home to the Emily Davis Art Gallery, which showcases art and design of regional, national and international significance as well as student, juried student and scholarship exhibitions.

In addition, art majors benefit from the visiting artists and lecture series sponsored by the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art.

Real World Experience

Students are encouraged to participate in co-op programs and internships. In recent years, students have participated in co-op and internship programs at such diverse sites as:

Career Opportunities

Degrees and Preparation

A degree in art education paves the way to teach in elementary, middle and secondary schools, and to specialize in a particular area of interest, such as drawing, photography or ceramics. All students seeking licensure must be enrolled in a College of Education teacher preparation program.

The federal government predicts job opportunities for teachers will be excellent in many parts of the country, particularly:

Career Services

Career Services is located in Student Union 211, with another office in College of Arts and Sciences Building 126. Career Services provides career coaching and programming, and develops valuable relationships with employers and campus partners to provide students with many opportunities for experiential learning and career development.
