Our history

Recognizing nurses for their contribution to health care in Summit County and the surrounding region is one of the primary purposes of The University of Akron School of Nursing Cameos of Caring program. Begun in 2002 and modeled after the successful Cameos of Caring program at the University of Pittsburgh, The University of Akron program continues to celebrate the nursing excellence and helps keep the nation's critical need for nurses at the forefront of public consciousness.

The hallmark of the Cameos of Caring program - the annual gala - recognized as one of the region's premier health care events is held annually in October. Beginning with the first gala, this special event has raised more than $800,000 to support an endowed nursing scholarship at The University of Akron. This scholarship helps provide for the education of the next generation of nurses.

Students who have received Cameos of Caring scholarships have spoken of the inspiration provided by the nurses recognized at the event, inspiration that has cemented the desire to become a nurse. The scholarship has also allowed others to focus on nursing studies without the added worry of paying for college.

Dr. Cynthia Capers, former Dean of the School of Nursing, is responsible for bringing the Cameos of Caring program to the University. Her vision along with the support of Johnson and Johnson has allowed the School of Nursing to use Cameos of Caring to build bridges within the regional health care community.
