Deputy Director of USPTO to Be Keynote Speaker at 15th Annual IP Symposium

02/04/2013

In October 2011, the most significant changes to U.S. patent law since the Patent Act of 1836 were enacted into law with the “America Invents Act (AIA).” The Honorable Teresa S. Rea, deputy under secretary of commerce for Intellectual Property and deputy director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, will discuss the agency’s implementation of AIA at the 15th annual Richard C. Sughrue Symposium on Intellectual Property Law and Policy on Monday, March 4 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The symposium will be held at the John S. Knight Center in Akron and is co-sponsored by The University of Akron School of Law and Sughrue Mion PLLC law firm.

The program also will include a review of developments in patent, trademark and copyright law, a presentation on ethics in a post-AIA world, and panel discussions on the soon-to-be-implemented first inventor-to-file system and pending IP-related Supreme Court cases. The luncheon speaker will be Jim Tressel, the University’s Vice President for Strategic Engagement. The luncheon is sponsored by Ulmer & Berne, LLP.
