UA police officer graduates from prestigious FBI National Academy

University of Akron Police Lt. Jim Gilbride recently graduated from the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Va. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training for law enforcement officers with proven records as professionals. 

Participation is by invitation only through a nomination process. Less than one-half of 1 percent of law enforcement officers in the country are nominated and selected to attend the National Academy. Gilbride becomes the fifth member of the University of Akron Police Department to graduate from the National Police Academy.

On average, these officers have 19 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

Training for the program is provided by the FBI Academy instructional staff, special agents and other members holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise.

“Members of the University of Akron Police Department have a deep commitment to training and excellence,” said UA Police Chief James Weber. “The willingness of officers like Lt. Gilbride to devote the hard work and additional time to programs like the National Academy is a clear reflection of the high standards to which UAPD officers hold themselves.”

The lieutenant served as a police officer with the city of Akron for nine years before joining the University of Akron Police Department in 2008. He has also served as a police academy instructor, teaching legal courses to new police officers.

Gilbride holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Juris Doctor from The University of Akron. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College. Gilbride is currently assigned to the Patrol Division.
