nn-2016-067087_0008University of Akron researchers collaborate with Argonne and Brookhaven National Laboratories to develop new measurements to understand the structural changes in electrodes of lithium ion batteries during operation. The goal of this work is to glean insight into multiscale changes in the structure of new electrode materials that occur as Li is repeatedly inserted and de-inserted to help to design new electrode materials that resist capacity fade. Advances in understanding how structural changes are related to battery performance can help to develop new batteries that both last longer between re-charging and that maintain this same long use time even after being charged and discharged for months or even years.
